For example, if we are adding 27 and 15: First, add the ones place digits: 7 + 5 = 12. Since 12 is greater than 9, we write down '2' in the ones place of our answer and 'carry over' the '1' (which represents 1 ten) to the tens place column. Next, add the tens place digits, including the carried-over '1': 1 (carried over) + 2 + 1 = 4. So, we write '4' in the tens place of our answer. The final answer is 42. This process ensures that every place value holds only one digit, while correctly accounting for larger sums by moving them to the appropriate higher place value.
