Ratio and Proportion are fundamental mathematical concepts that help us compare quantities and understand relationships between them. A ratio is simply a way to show how much of one thing there is compared to another. For example, if you have 3 red apples and 2 green apples, the ratio of red apples to green apples is 3:2. All these represent the same comparison. Proportion, on the other hand, is about two ratios being equal. If the ratio of red to green apples in one basket is 3:2, and in another larger basket you have 6 red apples and 4 green apples, the ratio is 6:4, which simplifies to 3:2. Since both ratios are the same, they are in proportion. This means the relationship between the quantities is consistent. Understanding proportion allows us to find missing values when we know the relationship holds true. For instance, if 2 pens cost ₹10, we can use proportion to figure out that 4 pens would cost ₹20, because the ratio of pens to cost (2:10) must be equal to the ratio of new pens to new cost (4:X).
