For most Indian children, multiplication tables (or "times tables") are the first big maths milestone after counting and addition. Get them solid, and division, fractions, and word problems all become easier. Struggle with them, and every later topic feels harder than it should. The good news: with the right order and a few simple tricks, almost any child can learn their tables without tears or endless rote.
Why multiplication tables matter so much
Multiplication is just repeated addition — 4 × 3 means "4 added three times" (4 + 4 + 4 = 12). Once a child truly understands that, tables stop being random numbers to memorise and start making sense. Strong tables knowledge speeds up division, long multiplication, fractions, and the word problems that fill Class 3, 4 and 5 exams.
The best order to learn tables
Don't start at 2 and grind to 20. Learn them in the order of easiest first, so your child builds confidence:
- Tables of 2, 5 and 10 — the easiest. 2s are doubling, 5s and 10s have clear patterns (5, 10, 15… and 10, 20, 30…).
- Tables of 3 and 4 — build on the confidence from the first three.
- Tables of 6, 7, 8, 9 — the "hard" middle. Save these for last and use tricks (below).

Memory tricks that actually work
- The 9s finger trick. Hold up ten fingers. For 9 × 4, fold down the 4th finger — you have 3 fingers before it and 6 after: the answer is 36. It works for 9 × 1 to 9 × 10.
- Doubling for 4s. The table of 4 is just the table of 2, doubled again. 4 × 6 = double of (2 × 6) = double of 12 = 24.
- 5s are half of 10s. 5 × 7 is half of 10 × 7 = half of 70 = 35.
- Anything × 10 just adds a zero: 10 × 8 = 80.
Multiplication as repeated addition
Before drilling, make sure your child sees why a table works. Lay out 3 groups of 4 buttons and count them: 12. Then show 4 × 3 on paper. This "repeated addition" bridge is the single most important idea — practise it with our Multiplication as repeated addition worksheet.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Rushing to 6, 7, 8. These are hardest; if you start here, children lose confidence. Master 2, 5, 10 first.
- Only reciting, never applying. A child can chant "seven eights are fifty-six" and still freeze on "there are 8 boxes of 7 pencils — how many pencils?" Always mix in word problems. Try Multiplication word problems for Class 3.
- Too much at once. One table a week, revised daily for five minutes, beats an hour-long cram.
A simple weekly plan
Pick one table. Day 1–2: understand it with objects and repeated addition. Day 3–4: recite and write it. Day 5: a short worksheet and 3 word problems. The next week, add a new table but keep revising the old ones. In about 8–10 weeks your child can have all tables up to 10 solid.
