A force is simply a push or a pull that can change an object's state of motion – making it start moving, stop moving, change direction, or even change its shape. 'Inertia' is an object's natural resistance to changes in its motion. A heavy truck has more inertia than a bicycle, meaning it's harder to get the truck moving and harder to stop it once it is, compared to the bicycle. Sir Isaac Newton famously described three laws that govern all motion. His First Law states that an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. His Second Law tells us that the acceleration of an object depends on its mass and the amount of force applied (think: a stronger push makes the toy car go faster). Finally, Newton's Third Law says that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction – if you push against a wall, the wall pushes back on you. Understanding these basic ideas helps us make sense of the physical world around us.
