Understanding the concept
Motion describes how an object changes its position over time. When we talk about motion, two key terms are distance and displacement. Distance is the total path length covered by an object, regardless of direction. For example, if you walk 5 meters north and then 3 meters south, your total distance covered is 8 meters. Displacement, on the other hand, is the shortest distance from the initial to the final position, including direction. In our example, your displacement would be 2 meters north. This distinction is vital. Speed is defined as the rate at which an object covers distance (distance divided by time), while velocity is the rate at which an object changes its displacement (displacement divided by time), meaning it includes both magnitude and direction. For instance, a car traveling at 60 km/h has a certain speed. If we say it's traveling at 60 km/h towards the east, we are talking about its velocity. Motion can be uniform, where an object covers equal distances in equal intervals of time, or non-uniform, where it covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time. An object moving in a straight line at a constant speed is an example of uniform motion, whereas a car accelerating or decelerating exhibits non-uniform motion. Understanding these concepts allows us to describe and predict the movement of everyday objects around us.
