Was and Were Worksheets (Class 1 & 2)
Was and were are the past-tense forms of the verb to be. After children learn is / am / are, the next step in Class 1 and Class 2 is talking about the past — I was at school, they were happy. The rule, simply
- Use was with I, he, she, it or any singular subject: I was tired. She was here.
- Use were with you, we, they or any plural subject: We were at the park. They were noisy.
- In questions, the verb comes first: Was she late? Were you happy?
- Negatives: was not / wasn't, were not / weren't.
