The rule, simply
- The − sign means 'take away'. The answer is called the difference.
- Subtraction is the opposite of addition: since 4 + 3 = 7, we know 7 − 3 = 4.
- Order matters: 7 − 4 is not the same as 4 − 7.
- For 2-digit subtraction, line up ones under ones and tens under tens.
- If the top digit in the ones column is smaller, borrow 1 from the tens column.
